The Siberian Green

Chrome diopside is a vivid, slightly yellowish-green gemstone whose intense colour — close to that of fine emerald or tsavorite — comes from the same chromium that colours those gems. Its much greater affordability has earned it the nickname 'Siberian emerald' in the trade, though its lower hardness means it needs to be worn and set with more care than true emerald.

Gemologically, chrome diopside is described as transparent, with a vitreous luster — qualities that shape how it catches and carries light once cut. Its colour comes from chromium, and a Mohs hardness in this range calls for a little extra care — pendants, earrings, and occasional-wear rings suit it better than an everyday ring.

A Vivid Green With a Catch

Chrome diopside's saturated green is genuinely comparable to fine emerald or tsavorite at a fraction of the price — but that affordability comes with a trade-off. At 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, chrome diopside is considerably softer than emerald (7.5–8) or tsavorite (7–7.5), and its two directions of cleavage make it more prone to chipping with hard knocks. For this reason, chrome diopside is best suited to earrings, pendants, and occasional-wear rings rather than an everyday ring — the same care guidance given to other softer coloured stones on this site. With sensible wear, however, its colour offers exceptional value for a vivid green gemstone.

Where Chrome Diopside Comes From

Russia — Siberia
The Inagli and other deposits in the Sakha Republic (Siberia) are the primary source of fine chrome diopside, giving the stone its informal 'Siberian' nickname.

Folklore and Healing Traditions

The information in this section reflects folklore and crystal-healing belief systems. These are matters of cultural and spiritual tradition, not scientific or medical claims, and are not a substitute for professional medical or financial advice.

As a relatively recent addition to the gem market, chrome diopside carries no centuries-old folklore of its own. In contemporary crystal-healing traditions, vivid green stones in general — including chrome diopside — are sometimes associated with themes of renewal, abundance, and balance. As with any such association, this is a matter of personal and cultural belief rather than established tradition, offered here for context rather than as guidance.

How Chrome Diopside Is Graded

Quality in chrome diopside is generally assessed across colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight — with colour and overall character typically the dominant factors in value.

What a Lab Report Confirms

A lab report identifies the species, describes colour, and discloses any treatment. Chrome diopside is essentially always natural and untreated — its vivid green is entirely as mined, with no widely used treatment to create or enhance the colour.

Natural, Ethical, Jaipur-Sourced

Every chrome diopside in the Paraiso Jewels vault is described accurately as to its natural or treated status on its label. We source through Jaipur's gem market — one of the world's oldest and most concentrated coloured-stone trading centres — and our stones can be verified at GTL Jaipur, the region's principal gem testing authority.

On request, each piece can be accompanied by documentation covering weight, dimensions, and treatment status. If you have questions about the origin or treatment of a specific stone, contact us via WhatsApp or email and we'll provide full details.
