Two stones of identical size and apparent color can sit at opposite ends of the price spectrum once their treatment history is disclosed. Complete transparency regarding enhancement status is paramount, both for the buyer's confidence and for the long-term resale and insurance value of the piece.

It helps to think of treatments along a spectrum, from fully natural at one end, through stable and widely accepted enhancements in the middle, to aggressive or impermanent treatments at the other end that can significantly compromise a stone's durability and worth.

The Untreated Premium

Natural gems extracted from the earth that require zero human intervention beyond standard lapidary cutting and polishing command absolute premium pricing. Their value reflects genuine geological rarity β€” the color, clarity, and saturation were formed entirely by natural processes over millions of years, with nothing added or altered. For collectors and investors, an untreated stone of fine quality is often considered the gold standard, and its price can carry a substantial multiple over a treated equivalent of similar visual appearance.

The Enhanced Framework

Standard lab treatments β€” such as traditional heat alteration β€” are commonly used to lighten over-dark tones, remove unwanted secondary hues, or enrich saturation in stones that are naturally a little too pale, too dark, or too brown to be commercially appealing. Heat treatment of this kind is permanent, stable under normal wear, and has been an accepted part of the gem trade for centuries. Treatment is not a flaw β€” it safely brings striking jewelry aesthetics into accessible price boundaries, allowing more people to enjoy genuinely beautiful natural stones at a fraction of the cost of an untreated equivalent.

Generally Accepted & Stable

Heat treatment (most sapphires, rubies, aquamarine, citrine, tanzanite), and minor oiling of emeralds with natural, colorless oils. These are permanent or industry-standard, widely disclosed, and have only a moderate effect on price relative to untreated stones.

Significant Value Reduction

Lattice diffusion (color added only to a thin surface layer), clarity-enhanced filling with resins or polymers, and dye-stabilized porous stones (e.g., some turquoise, ruby). These treatments are usually disclosed but can reduce value by a large margin compared to simply heated stones.

Aggressive, Non-Permanent β€” Buy With Caution

Artificial dye infusion into fractures, surface coating or film application, and high-lead glass fracture-filling (common in some "composite" rubies and emeralds). What the report gives you is the factual foundation on which that valuation can be made confidently.

Species Identification

Verifies the true mineral makeup of the stone β€” for example, confirming it as Natural Corundum (the species that includes ruby and sapphire), Natural Beryl (the species that includes emerald and aquamarine), or Natural Quartz (the species that includes amethyst and citrine), rather than a simulant or synthetic equivalent.

Treatment & Enhancement Status

Discloses whether the gem is untreated, standard heat-treated, or has been subjected to modern fillings, dyes, coatings, or diffusion processes β€” the single most price-relevant line on the entire report.

Color & Cutting Descriptions

Documents objective carat weight, precise dimensional mapping (length, width, depth), cutting style, and an overarching, standardized color description that allows two stones to be compared on equal footing.

Origin Opinion

For specific collector gems β€” most notably ruby, sapphire, and emerald β€” labs provide an expert opinion on geographic origin (such as Burmese, Kashmiri, Colombian, or Zambian) based on diagnostic internal inclusions and trace-element chemistry. Topaz Natural blue topaz is rare; most blue topaz on the market is colorless topaz that has been irradiated and heat-treated to produce blue tones. Some material is also coated to create "mystic" rainbow effects. Irradiated blue topaz is inexpensive and widely available; coated "mystic" topaz is priced as a fashion stone and the coating can wear over time. Honest labeling as "treated blue topaz" rather than implying a rare natural blue, and disclosure of any surface coating.
Tanzanite Heat treatment to produce the desirable blue-violet color from naturally brownish rough is standard practice across virtually the entire market. Heated tanzanite is the accepted norm and forms the baseline market price; untreated tanzanite is exceptionally rare and a genuine collector curiosity. Confirmation of standard heat treatment (expected) and, for larger stones, a full gemological report given tanzanite's value scaling with size.
Amethyst & Citrine Most commercial citrine is actually heat-treated amethyst, which turns yellow to orange under controlled heating. Natural citrine is comparatively rare. Heat-treated citrine is inexpensive and widely available; natural, untreated citrine in fine Madeira tones is notably scarcer and more valuable. Whether the citrine is natural or heat-treated amethyst β€” both are legitimate, but the distinction affects rarity and price expectations.
Garnet Most garnet varieties (including the wine-red and vivid red tones referenced in our alpha scale) are untreated, as their natural color is already commercially desirable. Because treatment is rare, price differences within garnet are driven mainly by color saturation, clarity, and variety (e.g., rhodolite vs. pyrope) rather than treatment status. Simple confirmation of "no known treatments," which is the norm for most garnet on the market.
Peridot Untreated in the vast majority of cases, as its signature yellow-green to vivid green color is entirely natural and treatments offer little commercial benefit. Price is driven primarily by saturation and size rather than treatment, with large, vividly green stones commanding a steep premium. Confirmation of natural, untreated status β€” again, the norm for this variety.
Multi Tourmaline Some tourmaline is heat-treated to lighten overly dark material or improve clarity; certain pink and red tourmalines may also be irradiated. Heat-treated tourmaline is common and reasonably priced; untreated, vividly saturated and well-zoned multicolor stones are prized by collectors. Disclosure of any heat or irradiation treatment, particularly for intensely saturated pink, red, or "watermelon" multicolor stones.

The Bottom Line on Treatment & Price

Treatment status does not make a stone "good" or "bad" β€” it simply tells you where on the value spectrum it sits, and helps ensure the price you pay matches the stone you're actually getting. A well-disclosed, heat-treated sapphire at a fair price can be a wonderful purchase; an undisclosed glass-filled ruby at a "natural" price is not.
