Golden rutile quartz ("rutilated quartz") is clear or smoky quartz containing fine, golden needle-like inclusions of rutile — sometimes called "angel hair" — that catch the light dramatically within the stone.

Gemologically, golden rutile is described as transparent to translucent, with a vitreous luster — qualities that shape how it catches and carries light once cut. Its colour comes from included golden rutile needles within colourless or smoky quartz, and a Mohs hardness in this range is durable enough for regular wear, though it benefits from being set thoughtfully and kept away from harder gems in storage.

Rutilated quartz has long captured the imagination of jewellers and collectors under poetic names — most enduringly "Venus hair stone" and "Cupid's darts," both referencing the fine golden threads suspended within the clear quartz. These names appear in European mineralogical writing going back centuries, and the stone enjoyed particular popularity in Victorian-era jewellery, where its unusual, almost magical appearance suited the period's fascination with natural curiosities. In parts of Asia, rutilated quartz has also been used in beads and amulets, sometimes believed to carry protective or auspicious qualities — a belief that persists in some crystal-healing traditions today.
