Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony containing green, moss- or foliage-like mineral inclusions, giving each stone a unique, almost landscape-like pattern despite the body of the stone often being colourless or grey.

Gemologically, green moss agate is described as translucent to opaque, with a vitreous to waxy luster — qualities that shape how it catches and carries light once cut. Its colour comes from included chlorite or other green mineral fragments resembling moss or foliage, and a Mohs hardness in this range is durable enough for regular wear, though it benefits from being set thoughtfully and kept away from harder gems in storage.

The Gardener's Talisman

Despite its name, moss agate is technically not a true agate (it lacks agate's banded structure) but has been grouped with agates in the trade for centuries. It became especially fashionable in 18th- and 19th-century Scotland, where moss agate and other native pebbles were cut and set into brooches, dirk handles, and other "Scottish pebble jewellery" — a style closely associated with Victorian-era Highland dress. Across various folk traditions, moss agate was also carried by farmers and gardeners as a talisman believed to encourage healthy crops and abundance, a association that persists in some crystal traditions today as a stone of growth and new beginnings.
