Moldavite is a natural glass formed roughly 15 million years ago when a meteorite impact melted surrounding rock, which then cooled into a distinctive olive-green glass. It is found in only a small region of Central Europe.

Gemologically, moldavite is described as transparent to translucent, with a vitreous (often etched/textured) luster — qualities that shape how it catches and carries light once cut. Its colour comes from iron within the glass formed by the impact event, and a Mohs hardness in this range calls for a little extra care — pendants, earrings, and occasional-wear rings suit it better than an everyday ring.

An Ancient Amulet, Long Before It Had a Name

Long before moldavite was scientifically described in the 18th century, its distinctive green glass was already being shaped by human hands: archaeological finds suggest fragments of moldavite were collected and worked into tools and ornaments by prehistoric peoples in Central Europe, drawn to its unusual colour and glassy texture even without understanding its origin. In more recent centuries it became a curiosity for mineral collectors, and in the late 20th century it found a new audience in the crystal-healing community, where its dramatic "from the sky" origin story has made it one of the most talked-about stones of its kind — a rare case of a gemstone's modern popularity being driven as much by its geological story as by its appearance.
