"Rainbow moonstone" describes a feldspar showing a vivid blue adularescence — a soft, glowing sheen that seems to float beneath the surface — across an otherwise clear or white body. Despite the name, it is gemologically closer to labradorite than to classic moonstone.

Gemologically, rainbow moonstone is described as transparent to translucent, with a vitreous to pearly luster — qualities that shape how it catches and carries light once cut. Its colour comes from internal layering causing adularescence (a floating blue-white sheen), and a Mohs hardness in this range calls for a little extra care — pendants, earrings, and occasional-wear rings suit it better than an everyday ring.

Bihar Material: Scarce, Flashy, and in High Demand

Within the trade, rainbow moonstone from Bihar, India is regarded as some of the finest available — known for an exceptionally strong, electric-blue flash (adularescence) set against unusually clean, eye-clear material with minimal internal disturbance. This combination of clarity and intensity of flash is uncommon: many rainbow moonstones show either good clarity with a weaker flash, or a strong flash in more included material, but rarely both at once.

Because supply of this top-tier Bihar material is limited relative to demand — particularly as rainbow moonstone has grown in popularity in recent years — well-flashed, clean Bihar stones command a noticeable premium over standard rainbow moonstone, and consistent availability at larger sizes can be a genuine challenge. For buyers, this means that a piece described as fine Bihar-quality moonstone — strong blue flash visible across the stone, with good transparency — represents the upper end of what this material can offer, and is priced accordingly.
