Smoky quartz is the brown-to-grey variety of quartz, its colour caused by natural irradiation acting on trace aluminium within the crystal — the same general mechanism that colours amethyst, but producing a smoky, earthy tone instead of purple.

Gemologically, smoky quartz is described as transparent, with a vitreous luster — qualities that shape how it catches and carries light once cut. Its colour comes from natural irradiation of trace aluminium within the quartz, and a Mohs hardness in this range is durable enough for regular wear, though it benefits from being set thoughtfully and kept away from harder gems in storage.

Cairngorm: Scotland's National Stone

In Scotland, smoky quartz found in the Cairngorm Mountains became known as "cairngorm" and developed into a defining feature of Highland dress — set into the large brooches used to fasten plaids, into sgian-dubh (knife) handles, and into sporran mounts and kilt pins. Cairngorm jewellery reached the height of its popularity in the 19th century, particularly after Queen Victoria's enthusiasm for Scottish Highland culture made tartan and cairngorm-set silver fashionable across Britain. While the original Cairngorm deposits are now largely depleted, "cairngorm" remains a recognised name in the trade for smoky quartz, and Scottish-style smoky quartz jewellery continues to be made and worn today.
