Tiger's eye is a golden-brown quartz showing chatoyancy — a sharp band of reflected light that moves across the stone as it's turned, caused by parallel fibrous mineral structures within the quartz.

Gemologically, tiger eye is described as opaque, with a silky to vitreous luster — qualities that shape how it catches and carries light once cut. Its colour comes from iron oxide staining of fibrous quartz, and a Mohs hardness in this range is durable enough for regular wear, though it benefits from being set thoughtfully and kept away from harder gems in storage.

An Eye for Protection

The shifting band of light across tiger's eye has long suggested a watchful "eye" to those who wear it, and this resemblance has shaped its symbolic use across cultures. In ancient Egypt, the stone was associated with the protective Eye of Horus/Ra, used in amulets believed to ward off harm. Roman soldiers are said to have carried or worn tiger's eye into battle for courage and protection — a tradition echoing similar beliefs around other chatoyant and red stones discussed elsewhere on this site. This long association between the stone's "eye-like" optical effect and protective symbolism remains part of why tiger's eye continues to be worn as a talisman today.
